As I mentioned on
July 14, the 18th is the American memorial day for Camillus de Lellis, the Roman Catholic
patron saint of nurses, hospitals, and the sick. Are there patrons of health care workers among other denominations or tutelary dieties? I don't know.

The Saint Benedict center has a
long biography of Camillus. There isn't much information available on the epidemic in Rome of 1590, although one source in
Google books identifies an influenza epidemic of 1590-1591.
